What is Somatic Psychotherapy?
Somatic Psychotherapy is a body/mind approach to therapy that bridges current research in neuroscience and psychology with the ancient practice of mindfulness. “Soma” means “body” and the body holds unconscious memory and intelligence, which can be accessed through mindfulness.
Mindfulness brings attention to feelings and sensations in the body, which invites the unconscious to come out of hiding. This process facilitates a deeper understanding of who we are, what we are longing for and ultimately what we are needing. The work is highly experiential and is done in a safe and supportive way to heal old traumas and experience a more authentic way of being and living.
Recent neuroscience supports that mindfulness can literally build new neural pathways in our brain to change deeply held negative habituated responses to stress and support new healthier choices.
